Steam Ships 700+ Games a Week Now. Your Discovery Plan Needs to Live Outside the Store.

A single week in late August cleared 720 new releases — a record. The store’s front page is a firehose, and your game is one drop. The response that works is to stop competing for the firehose and build paths around it.

The store still matters — it’s where the purchase happens. But the discovery happens elsewhere:

  • Curator and creator coverage. A trusted voice pointing at you beats any algorithmic placement.
  • Community threads where players recommend each other. Presence there, helpfully, earns mentions.
  • Consistent social clips that lead back to the page.

The mistake is treating store optimization as the whole job. A perfect page with no path to it converts no one. Pair the page with a steady off-store presence, and the two reinforce each other: clips bring people, the page closes them.

For a solo developer, the sustainable version is boring on purpose: one good clip a week, one real reply a day, a page that says what the game is. Compounding beats heroics.
